For that drawing, I just set the default Pen tool in SAI to a texture called Noise!

Someone asked me to draw what I think the new panda Pokemon might evolve into, and I can’t say no to that. (◡‿◡✿)

I can see it being both a 2- or 3-stage evolution line, but I’ve only drawn its last stages here! Hopefully the real deal will be way better than these, but I can see its evolution design possibly going down one of three paths:

one) where it embraces the leafy theme as a part of its own body, two) a naughty fighter who uses bamboo sticks, three) a tough and heavy sumo wrestler panda fighter

I’m really excited about this generation and I can’t wait until we get to see more! *u*

SO I'VE BEEN WONDERING... Do you randomly make up colors on the spot when you draw, or do you tend to be inspired by something and use that? Or if you have another way, I'm very curious! Regardless, you have a serious eye for color! Love your work. <3

And actually yeah, I use all sorts of methods! Sometimes before I even start a picture, I visualize just what kinds of colors I want to use, and other times I pick them as I go. Other OTHER times, I’m experimenting around and sometimes I even use palettes from ColourLovers.com. It really all depends on the sort of picturesque mood I’m going for or a certain style I’m trying to do, but I’ll be honest; a lot of the time the colors I end up choosing are just colors that I really like! It’s kinda hard to describe how I pick my colors because sometimes I just pick colors based on how they feel together, and I adjust them or keep them depending on if they feel… right? A huge part about colors for me is “feeling” them and their harmony, and if something feels jarring and interrupts their flow, then I usually can tell that something’s off. I-I‘M SO SORRY, I REALLY WISH I COULD DESCRIBE THIS BETTER BUT I PAINT WITH ALL THE COLORS OF THE WIND~

Personally I think anyone can proudly like and wear my designs, but I understand varying preferences. But I guess my designs so far have been a little girly, haven’t they? Ahaha, sorry about that! I guess I accidentally designed more girly shirts since I’m a girl, oops. /w\;;

But yes! I’m thinking of maybe making a matching shirt to the Nidoqueen one with a Nidoking version, and I think the phoenix design that I’ve made is a nice gender-neutral design as well! I still have lots more ideas to come, so don’t worry. If anyone has any ideas for more masculine designs, feel free to suggest some as well~!

CC, I /know/ you've answered this before and I apologize for asking it again, but how do you put textures, like the half-tone texture, into your brushes and layers in SAI? I know you can just set the layer to Overlay, but that doesn't help brush-wise.

This is always so hard to answer because SAI makes it kinda stupidly complicated, aughhh. xD

I’ve tried to look up so many videos and tutorials to show others how to do it and I can’t even remember how or where I learned it myself, to be honest! Here’s the best tutorial I could find explaining how to do it though . It’s a really lengthy and somewhat confusing process, but after you do it right a few times, it’s not so bad. And once you get to see your own custom textures loaded into SAI and start using them, the trouble you went through to do it will be totally worth it. B]

dear crayon-chewer I love how you use the halftone pattern on your drawings, I've searched for a tutorial about how to do it, but I don't find one, so I wanted to ask how do you put/do the halftone pattern on your drawings? thanks and I love you art alot, keep it up

Aww gosh, thanks so much! I really love half-tones too, they just add this really cool sort of comic booky feel to things and I love it!

I usually do one of three methods to achieve the half-tone patterns in my artwork, so here we go!:

1) To get something of this effect, I set the whole SAI layer texture of my choice to this:

2) To get something like this or this, I apply a texture that looks like this to a marker brush and just brush all over the canvas:

3) And to get something like this, I borrow a really cool method that I learned from Lynn! All I do is take a screenshot of a half-tone effect I create in PhotoShop and convert it to black and white. Then I cut and paste it and re-size the dots to how I see fit in each part of the picture. So the result is varying sizes of half-tone dots in select parts, creating a really cool shading effect. It’s a little more tedious than the other two methods but I seriously love how it looks in the end!

I hope this helps and also gives a little insight to my half-tone methods. :>

Here you go. I just have the default pen tool in SAI set to this texture and voila! I’d love to see you guys do even more creative things with it! :D
